Is hemoglobin level of "6.0" dangerous?

I was going to donate blood but they check everyone's hemoglobin count on the spot and mine was a 6.0, which wasn't even on their chart. My friend who is premed said that levels that low usually require a transfusion, is that true? Should I see my doctor? What might he or she recommend? A transfusion sounds pretty serious.
