My son is currently serving a mission and has been sent to areas that normally would be dangerous for white Americans to be in and he says he is very careful, but doesn't worry too much because the people are God fearing and they know who the missionaries are. The missionaries have a reputation for giving service and while my son hasn't said that gangs protect the missionaries, he says they do leave them alone. But the missionaries certainly aren't immune to danger.
