the best in your case would be a hybrid bike which is half mountain and half road bike. You get the best of both worlds. Speed on pavement, and handling on the trails. Rockymountain makes really nice hybrid bikes. They are a bit more expensive than what your budget suggests, but your getting a Canadian handbuilt machine that will last you for the rest of your life.
